Funeral services for Mr. Jerry Wayne “Popcorn” Hurst, age 71 of Ashland, will be Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Rev. Tim Tipton and Tanner Hurst officiating. Burial will follow in the Clay County Memory Gardens.
Mr. Hurst passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Clay County Hospital. Mr. Hurst was born on June 21, 1940 to William Dewey Hurst and Clara Sara Harris Hurst in Clay County. He was a United States Army veteran and had worked for several years as a dump truck operator on various constructions sites including R.L. Harris Dam for Alabama Power and traveled across the country working for the Teamsters Union. He later worked for Spring Valley and Tyson Foods in the maintenance department.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Hurst of Ashland; two daughters: Julie Fetner (Robert) and Jackie Porter (Jason) both Ashland; three sons: Randy Hurst (Michele) of Talladega, Billy Hurst (Candace) of Ashland and Dewayne Hurst (Sherry) of Ashland; three sisters: Margaret Ann Maddox of Eclectic, AL, Rosa Linda Anderson of Hollywood, AL and Sara Ann Brown of Clanton; four brothers: Tommy Hurst of Dutton, AL, Jack Cooper of Ashland, Gary Cooper of Ashland and Roger Cooper of Tupelo, MS plus 11 grandchildren. Mr. Hurst was preceded in death by his parents, William Dewey Hurst and Clara Sara Harris and two brothers: William Earl Hurst and Bobby Hurst.
Pallbearers will be George Shirey, Sparkey Mitchell, Gary Cooper Jr., Allen Waldrop, Jerry Cooper and Edie Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be Junior Taylor, Mike McCullough, Andy McCullough and Ralph Mattox.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland on Friday, February 3, 2012 from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Saturday.
